Why Buy Our Seeds?
Our Seeds
Locally Adapted
We only sell open pollinated seeds which have proven themselves to thrive in the wet, mild South West climate. All the varieties in our catalogue have been thoroughly trialled in less-than-perfect growing conditions at our farm in West Dorset. If they grow well for us, they should do great in your garden too!
Locally Grown
Currently, we produce about a third of our varieties on our farm. This will continue to grow each year. We also source seed locally from ecologically managed small farms (like ourselves) and a couple of excellent larger seed companies who specialise in UK grown seed.
Seed grown in the UK is better adapted to UK growing conditions. We find locally grown seed performs better than seed grown overseas.
Ecologically Produced
Our farm is certified organic with the Soil Association. We produce our seeds whilst building soil health and local biodiversity. A seed farm in a magnet for birds and pollinators. We source our seed from organic and agroecological suppliers who share our commitment to ecological farming. Our packets of seed aren't officially certified organic because we've yet to get our packing office certified.
Great Germination
We are transparent about the germination rates of our seeds and include the most recent germination test result on each product page. This is unusual but we think its an important piece of information to have when buying seeds.
Heirloom & Open Pollinated
Our seeds are all open pollinated, this means you can freely save seed from them at home. OP seeds are more genetically diverse than F1 hybrids and we believe they're more resilient plants. We love heirloom varieties with culinary heritage and we share the stories behind the varieties in our descriptions.
Not Too Much Choice
Choice can be overwhelming. We offer a relatively small selection of varieties which have all been picked for a reason. We outline clearly why we've chosen them in the variety description.
